Fayetteville's Chamber of Commerce has recently developed a web site, click here to view it. Also included on the Chamber's web site is a dining guide to Fayetteville.

Fayetteville was established in 1829 and known early on as Washington Court because it was the county seat for Washington County. The name of the city was changed because another town in south Arkansas was already named for Washington.

Fayetteville was the home of Archibald Yell, Arkansas's first congressman and its second governor, who died in the Battle of Buena Vista during the Mexican War.

The town would become an important stop on the Butterfield Overland stage route. Butterfield built a hotel, barns and a stable on land that is now the site of the old Washington County Courthouse. He and his family built a home on Center Street as well.

Battles during the Civil War laid waste to much of Fayetteville, where Union and Confederate forces traded control of the town several times.

The University of Arkansas was established in 1871 as a land-grant institution and remains the only research-oriented institution in the state. It is the largest employer in the city, although several other companies, including Tyson Foods, Campbell Soup and Levi's Jeans, have operations in the city.

Today, the city is the retail center of Northwest Arkansas and the largest town in the region with a population of 42,000 in 1990 census. It has grown to well over 54,000 by 1995 estimates.
